SEMINARIO
"3D Culture Models and Tissue-Specific Microenvironments:
new Frontiers for Basic and Applied Research"Giovanna Mazzoleni, MD
Associate Professor of General Pathology
Head, Laboratory of Tissue Engineering
Anatomy & Physipathology Unit
Department of Clinical and Experimental Sciences
School of Medicine - University of BresciaG.M. has more than a 30 years’ research experience in the field of experimental hepato-carcinogenesis, in vitro testing, and tissue engineering methods directed at the development/characterisation of innovative models of human tissues for basic research, pharmaco-toxicology, and clinical applications (regenerative medicine/patient targeted therapy). In particular, she has a specific expertise in the functional/molecular study of gap junction-mediated intercellular communication (GJIC) and in the 3D cell- and tissue-culture technologies based on the principle of the microgravity condition (RCCSTM bioreactors). Since 1991, she actively participated, as scientific project leader, to EC funded projects, and to national and international research programs specifically aimed at the development of innovative in vitro test systems for pharmaco-toxicological applications. In collaboration with several groups of Occupational and Industrial Medicine and of Environmental Engineering, she also coordinated the activity of research units within national inter-university programs aimed to investigate, in vitro, the mechanism(s) of organ-specific toxicity of heavy metals and endocrine disruptors (EDs) compounds.
She is member of national and international scientific societies with interests in “alternative methods”, space medicine, basic and developmental toxicology, and author of more than 150 publications in those fields (full papers with international peer review, book chapters, abstracts).
Major Research Topics:
1. Bioengineered 3D in vitro models of human tissues
2. Microgravity effects on osteo-articular system
3. In vitro testingSuggested readings and bibliography
