Course objectives

The course aims to provide the student with knowledge of the rational basis of personalising drug therapy and the clinical applications of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Pharmacogenetics. At the end of the course, the student will be able to assess and describe how to personalise a drug therapy and to envisage its possible therapeutic uses, taking into account its structure, mechanism of action, kinetics and the relationship between pharmacological and toxicological effects in relation to the patient's genetics.

Results of learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will have to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the fundamental mechanisms governing pharmacogenetics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, the main genetic and non-genetic factors responsible for variability in drug response, and the mode of action to tailor therapy for maximum response while minimising toxic effects.
