Course objectives

The main objectives of the course are:

  • Provide students with epidemiological data on the association between viral/parasitic infections and chronic organ damage
  • Discuss the pathogenesis of these changes and the potential biomarkers for assessing organ damage
  • Assess potential treatments that, by affecting microbe replication or biomass, may have an effect on tissue pathology

Course delivery

Two lectures will be provided with one focusing on the central nervous system and the other one on several other organs and tissues. At the beginning of each class an online quiz will be provided in order to test pre-activity knowledge. Approximately 20% of the time will be devoted to group discussion.

After the end of the course students will be asked to prepare a brief (one-page max) study draft developing a research project on one of the discussed topics.

Program

This course programme includes two formal lectures and pre-reading materials. The focus is on the interplay between infections and long-term/chronic consequences in the central nervous system (mostly focusing on neurodegeneration) and in several organs and tissues (assessing fibrosis and potential therapeutic options). This will include, among others, available data on herpesviruses, HIV, Toxoplasma, HCV, HBV, SARS-CoV-2 and Schistosoma.
